I’ve gone on record before (more than once!) saying I’d rather stick pins in my eyes than go on a cruise.
Dramatic? Maybe. Honest? Absolutely.
For years, I’ve had strong feelings about cruising — especially after spending extended time in the Caribbean and witnessing the sudden daily invasion of massive crowds. You know the scene: thousands of people pouring off giant ships, overwhelming quiet coastal towns, and then disappearing just as fast, leaving behind a trail of takeaway wrappers, confusion, and chaos.
It never sat well with me.
But here I am. About to embark on my very first cruise. On the Queen Mary 2, no less. Sailing through the Norwegian fjords.
And I can hardly believe it either.
Why the Norwegian Fjords Changed My Mind
Even in my most cruise-sceptical moments, I always had a caveat: “Well, maybe I’d consider the Norwegian fjords…”
There’s something about their wild, otherworldly beauty — towering cliffs, glassy waters, cascading waterfalls — that has always pulled at me. And seeing them from the water? That part does make sense. It’s not about descending on towns, it’s about gliding through raw, untamed landscapes that have barely changed in centuries.
Add to that: this isn’t just any cruise. This is the Queen Mary 2 — a vessel of timeless elegance, where afternoon tea is served with white gloves and the dress code includes phrases like “evening attire required.”
In other words, this is luxury — and that’s very much not my usual travel style.
When Two Worlds Collide: Budget Meets Ballgown
As many of you may know, Larry — my new husband — likes his travel a little more polished than I do. He enjoys comfort, style, and yes, luxury. I, on the other hand, am perfectly content with hand luggage, hiking boots, and the occasional dodgy guesthouse with shared bathrooms.
So, this cruise is more than just a journey through the fjords. It’s an experiment in meeting in the middle. A blend of his world and mine. Of fine dining and rugged landscapes. Of ballroom dancing at night and windswept decks by day.
Will I feel completely out of my comfort zone? Probably. Will I overthink what to wear to dinner? Almost certainly. Will it stretch me, challenge me, and give me stories I’d never have had otherwise? Absolutely!
The Heart of Transformation Lies in the Unknown
That’s the thing about travel — the kind of travel that changes you. It’s not always about finding the perfect destination or ticking off a bucket list. It’s about stepping into the unfamiliar and letting yourself grow from it.
Whether it’s a solo backpacking trip through South America or sipping champagne in a stateroom overlooking the Norwegian Sea, travel can transform you — if you let it.
This cruise is a chance for me to practice what I preach. To embrace something different. To find joy in a little luxury, without losing myself in the process. To bring curiosity, humour, and maybe a sequin or two.
And I’ll be bringing you with me — stories, reflections, and all. See how I got on in the photo as a preview!

Maybe it’s luxury. Maybe it’s solo travel. Maybe it’s hiking the Camino or joining a group tour for the first time.
Whatever it is, don’t be afraid to try on a different chapter. You might be surprised who you become in the process.
