Updated on April 23rd, 2025

Earth Day, celebrated each year today, on April 22nd, isn’t just about protecting the planet—it’s also a perfect moment to reconnect with the natural world and, just as importantly, with yourself. For many of us in midlife, this season of life often brings a stirring call to reevaluate, rediscover, and realign with what truly matters. And there’s no better place to do that than immersed in nature.

Here I share some thoughts, ideas and inspiration for how you can care for the planet, whilst also taking a journey of self-care.

Caring for the Earth Starts with Caring for You

Midlife is a powerful season. It’s often a time of transition—a letting go of old roles and responsibilities, and a rediscovery of who you are and who you want to be next.

Spending time in nature, especially when done with intention and respect, can be deeply healing. It reminds you of your place in the bigger picture and helps you tune back into your own rhythms. The same care we offer the planet—rest, renewal, presence—we must offer ourselves.

Nature Destinations That Nurture You

Imagine standing at the edge of a loch in the Scottish Highlandswrapped in a woolly jumper (pictured in Loch Etive, minus the jumper!), as the wind whispers ancient stories through the hills. Or soaking in a steaming hot spring in Iceland, surrounded by lava fields and snow-dusted peaks, feeling the heat rise through your body as the silence seeps into your soul. Or picture yourself sipping tea from a thermos in the Canadian Rockies, looking out over turquoise lakes, glaciers glinting in the distance, and feeling something shift inside you. These green getaways aren’t just scenic—they’re soul-deep.

Whether you choose a forest bathing experience in Japan, a hiking retreat through the Alps, or an unplugged weekend in a log cabin off-grid, nature has a magical way of stripping away the noise. It clears space—for clarity, for confidence, for creativity. The stillness helps you hear your inner voice again. The movement reawakens your body and spirit. The views remind you of how expansive life can be.

Sustainable Travel That Nourishes Both You and the Earth

Eco-travel doesn’t mean giving up comfort. It means choosing experiences that tread lightly, support local communities, and immerse you in the magic of nature. Why not consider these inspiring options:

Lapa Rios LodgeCosta Rica – Situated in the biodiverse Osa Peninsula, Lapa Rios Lodge is a pioneer in ecotourism. The lodge operates on renewable energy, including solar power, and implements rainwater collection and waste recycling systems. It also supports local communities by employing residents and investing in education and conservation initiatives.

Song Saa Private IslandCambodia – Located in the Koh Rong Archipelago, Song Saa Private Island integrates luxury with sustainability. The resort utilises local materials, supports marine conservation through Cambodia’s first private marine reserve, and engages in community development via the Song Saa Foundation.

Elephant Nature Park, Thailand – Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai is renowned for its ethical approach to elephant tourism. The sanctuary rescues and rehabilitates elephants, providing them with a natural habitat free from performances and rides. Visitors can volunteer and learn about elephant conservation efforts.

Rewilding Europe Tours – Rewilding Europe focuses on restoring natural ecosystems across the continent. Their initiatives include reintroducing native species and promoting biodiversity. Travellers can participate in tours that support these conservation efforts, offering a chance to witness rewilding in action.
