Visa applications can feel overwhelming, but they’re worth it! Here are my top tips for women in midlife planning transformative travel experiences.
Sitting in a Visa Office, Dreaming of the Great Wall
As I write this, I’m sitting in an office in London, waiting to be called to pay for my visa to China.
My passport has already been taken (which always leaves me feeling a little unsettled), and I’ve filled out (rejected and resubmitted) countless forms, scanned and rescanned photos and shown proof of flights and accommodation for the entire journey.
I even achieved the impossible — bypassing Expedia’s chatbots to get my husband’s name added to our hotel bookings. Apparently, just mine wasn’t acceptable!
Today, I’ve had my fingerprints documented, I’m about to be charged over £100, and I’ll still have to return in a few days to collect everything.
You might ask, “Is it worth all the hassle?”
My answer? Always.
Why This Trip Feels Different
I’ve been to Hong Kong several times, but this will be my first visit to mainland China — and I’m excited.
This isn’t a typical tourist adventure. The main reason for our visit is connected to our future renovation project. To manage costs, we’re sourcing large components directly from Chinese manufacturers. So instead of temples and markets, I’ll be attending glass exhibitions and meeting suppliers.
But, of course, I still plan to make time for the Great Wall, Shanghai’s street food, and a ride on the famous Bullet Train. After all — it would be rude not to!

Why Visas Matter for Transformative Travel
If you’re a woman in midlife planning your next big adventure, you’ve probably faced the dreaded visa application at some point. It’s one of those necessary evils that can make or break a trip.
But here’s the thing — the process isn’t just red tape. It’s part of your transformation.
It’s a reminder that every adventure requires a little courage, patience, and persistence.
So, as I wait for my number to be called, here are my top visa application tips — straight from the visa centre queue — to help make your next travel experience smoother, calmer, and more empowering.
1. Start Early and Research the Requirements
Every country has its quirks. China, for example, requires detailed proof of your flights, hotel bookings, and even your fingerprints.
Before you start, head straight to the official government or embassy website (not a third-party site). Find out:
- What type of visa you need (tourist, business, etc.)
- How long it takes to process
- What supporting documents are required
Tip: Start at least 4–6 weeks before you travel. Early preparation avoids panic and helps you enjoy the anticipation instead of the anxiety. Trust me when I say panicking for a visa you have left too late is no fun and adds unnecessary stress to your pre-trip planning.
2. Get Organised — Paperwork Is Power
Being organised saves time, stress, and unexpected costs.
Here’s what most visa offices may ask for:
- Passport (with at least 6 months’ validity)
- Passport photos
- Proof of flights and accommodation
- Travel insurance
- Financial statements
- In person visits
Tip: Keep both printed and digital copies of everything. Maybe store them somewhere like Google Drive — that way you can access them even if your bag or phone goes missing.
3. Check, Double-Check, and Then Check Again
Details matter. I learned this the hard way when one of my bookings didn’t match the name on my passport. It caused unnecessary panic — and almost made me miss the flight entirely!
Before you submit:
- Make sure names and dates match across all documents. I use TripIt app to make sure I have everything in place for independent travel. A few times it’s helped me realise when I have accidently booked the wrong month! More on this and all my other favourite travel apps and websites HERE.
- Confirm addresses and hotel names exactly as they appear on bookings.
- Review every line for accuracy.
Tip: Have a trusted friend or travel partner proofread your form — fresh eyes catch easy-to-miss details.
4. Approach Appointments with Confidence
Whether you’re at an embassy, visa centre, or interview, a calm, confident attitude goes a long way.
- Dress neatly — first impressions matter.
- Arrive early and keep your documents tidy in a folder.
- Be honest and polite; visa officers appreciate clarity and organisation.
I’ll admit, giving up my passport always feels a little unnerving. But it’s also symbolic — a moment of surrender before the freedom that comes with travel.
5. Be Patient and Flexible
Visa processing rarely runs on schedule. Instead of letting the waiting time frustrate you, use it.
I’m already planning my Great Wall visit, researching Shanghai’s food scene, and practising a few phrases in Mandarin while I wait.
Tip: Apply as early as possible so delays don’t derail your plans. Flexibility is your superpower — in travel and in life.
6. Celebrate the Moment You Get It
When that visa finally lands in your passport, celebrate!
It’s not just a piece of paper — it’s a symbol of resilience, independence, and courage.
Every form you filled out, every fingerprint scanned, every detail double-checked — it all represents your commitment to exploring the world and yourself.
The Bigger Picture: Travel as Transformation
The visa process can feel like a test, but it’s really a teacher. It reminds us that meaningful journeys often require persistence and patience.
So if you’re a woman in midlife dreaming of transformative travel, don’t let the paperwork stop you. Instead, see it as the first step in your next adventure — proof that you can handle whatever comes your way.
Because whether you’re sourcing glass for a renovation project, walking the Great Wall, or rediscovering your confidence, the answer to “Is it worth it?”
will always be… Absolutely!
If this post inspired you, share it with another woman who’s hesitating to take that first step.
