Adventure as a Confidence Builder: Why Midlife is the Perfect Time to Explore

When we think of adventure, it’s easy to picture daredevils jumping out of planes or scaling mountains. But adventure doesn’t have to be extreme to be transformative. For women in midlife, adventure can be the ultimate self-confidence training ground — one step, one experience, one bold choice at a time.

Because here’s the truth: every adventure, no matter how small, teaches you something about who you are and what you’re capable of.

Adventure is About More Than Destinations

Adventure isn’t always about where you go. It’s about how you show up.

It’s in those small but significant moments that stretch you just beyond your comfort zone:

  • Navigating an airport alone and realizing you’ve got everything under control.
  • Asking for directions in another language and discovering people are more helpful than you imagined.
  • Learning a new skill — whether that’s paddleboarding (like when I took a lesson in Costa Rica, and (almost) managed to stay upright), salsa dancing, or even figuring out how to read a foreign metro map.

Each of these experiences reminds you: I can do this. And once you’ve done it once, you know you can do it again.

Why Midlife is the Perfect Time

Many women hit midlife and start asking, “What’s next?” Maybe your children are grown up, your career is shifting, or you’ve simply reached a moment where you’re ready to put yourself first.

Adventure is the perfect answer.

This stage of life brings perspective, resilience, and a deeper understanding of yourself — all the ingredients you need to embrace exploration. And as you collect little wins along the way, you build a foundation of self-confidence that carries into every other part of life.

Building Confidence, One Adventure at a Time

Think of adventure as a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it gets.

  • The first time you board a plane solo, your heart may race (like me relearning the skill on a trip to Iceland post pandemic, hence the photo).
  • By the fifth time, you’re breezing through security, passport in hand, smiling at your own independence.
  • And by the tenth, you’re already planning your next destination before you’ve even landed.

Confidence is built in layers. Each step makes the next one easier.

Your Next Adventure Awaits

So, ask yourself: What’s one small adventure I can take this week?

Maybe it’s exploring a new part of your own city. Maybe it’s booking a weekend getaway on your own. Or maybe it’s finally saying yes to that big, transformative trip you’ve been dreaming about and asking me to help you plan it (see the PS below for details).

Adventure doesn’t just change the way you see the world — it changes the way you see yourself. And that, more than anything, is the real gift of travel.

What’s the last adventure that boosted your confidence? Share it with me — I’d love to celebrate your win with you. Hit reply to this email to let me know or connect via your social method of choice (FacebookInstagramYouTubePinterestThreads TikTok or LinkedIn) to give me all the details.

We Made It! As you may now know we completed our marathon honeymoon walking 500km across Northern Spain over 5 weeks to arrive in Santiago de Compostela. The whole experience was epic and I’ve been sharing the daily updates for the last 5 weeks over on YouTube. Santiago gave us a real treat when we arrived which you can see in the final video of the series HERE (watch to the end for something very special!).

It wasn’t always fun.

It wasn’t always pretty.

It wasn’t always exciting.

But with every step I learned more about myself and what I am capable of. If you have been inspired to do the same, then don’t miss any of the updates HERE

🏠 For accommodation, I use Expedia and Booking.com primarily. They have their own loyalty schemes which is easy to progress through the levels for better discounts and inclusions.

🚍 For tours and activities, my preferred supplier is Get Your Guide

🗺️ For multi day or week tours, check out G Adventures. I used them for trips in Costa Rica, Peru, and Galapagos.

🤞 I would never leave home without travel insurance. With Safety Wing you can take out an annual policy and pay monthly. This takes the hassle out of having to remember for us regular travellers.

🛫 For cheap flights, check out Skyscanner or join Jacks Flight Club which scans the internet for error fares (UK only).

🧳 For luggage storage on your travels, I recommend the service by Bounce.
