Have you been dreaming about exploring the world, but don’t know where to begin? For many women, the idea of travelling can be both exciting and a little overwhelming. But travel isn’t just about seeing new places. It’s also about self-discovery, stepping outside your comfort zone, and experiencing life in new ways.
If you’ve been waiting for the right time to travel, then here is your sign!
Back in my twenties I embarked on my first solo travel adventure, interrailing around Europe before heading off for a year exploring Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia. I returned home with a new found sense of my own capabilities, a much more confident, and assured version of myself. I felt like I could take on the world single-handedly. Because effectively I had!
It was such a journey of self-discovery that when I found myself alone again, twenty years later, I turned to travel to find out who I was once more.
I believe that travel can change your life no matter what age or stage you are at.
Maybe, like I did, you feel a bit lost. Maybe you are at a cross-roads and are unsure where you want life to go next. Maybe you are standing on the edge of the next chapter but not sure which direction you want it to take you.
If you need time to refocus on yourself before making decisions on what to do next. If you want a similar transformational travel experience but don’t know where to start. If you need space to rediscover who you are and what you want now.
You are in the right place.
I can help you!
Today I am here to guide you through the benefits of travel for personal growth, what to consider when planning, and some of the most popular destinations that are perfect for women looking to start their travel journey.
The Benefits of Travel forSelf-Discovery
For many of us, midlife is a time of reflection and reinvention. Travelling at this stage of life can help you reconnect with yourself in ways that feel meaningful and transformative.
Here’s why:
Break Away from Routine: Travel gives you the chance to step away from the daily grind and experience life through a fresh lens. Whether it’s a new culture, cuisine, or landscape, these new experiences allow you to reconnect with who you are outside of your routine.
Boost Your Confidence: Navigating unfamiliar places, meeting new people, and trying new things can boost your self-confidence and remind you of how capable you truly are. Each challenge you overcome builds resilience and adds to your sense of empowerment.
Gain Perspective: Seeing how people live in different parts of the world can open your mind to new ideas and perspectives. It can also help you appreciate the little things in your own life and remind you of what’s most important.
Rediscover Your Passions: Travelling often reignites old passions or sparks new ones. Whether it’s a love for nature, photography, art, or cooking, you may find that your adventures bring you back to the things that truly make you happy.
What to Consider When Planning Your First Trip
Starting your travel journey can be easier than you think. Here are some key things to consider when planning:
Solo vs. Group Travel: Decide whether you’d like to travel solo or with a group. Solo travel offers freedom and flexibility, while group tours can be a great way to meet like-minded people and have everything organized for you. You can check out my take on both options HERE.
Comfort Level: Think about your comfort level with things like language barriers, safety, and the type of experiences you want (adventure, relaxation, cultural immersion). Choose a destination that matches your confidence as a traveller. For example, places like the UK or Australia may feel more familiar, while Southeast Asia could be an exciting adventure for those ready to dive into new cultures.
Budget: Set a realistic budget. Consider airfare, accommodation, activities, and daily expenses. Research destinations that offer great experiences without breaking the bank – places like Portugal, Mexico, or Thailand are affordable and offer rich cultural experiences. If you are looking for ways to keep costs down or ideas on how to save for that big trip, you can read my comprehensive blog post HERE. Length of Stay: Think about how much time you want to spend on your trip. If you’re new to travel, you may want to start with a shorter trip to get comfortable before committing to longer journeys.
Popular Travel Destinations for First-Time Travellers
Here are some fantastic destinations that offer a mix of adventure, culture, and relaxation—perfect for women who want to dip their toes into travel:
Lisbon, Portugal: A safe and welcoming city with stunning architecture, delicious food, and beautiful coastal views. Portugal is known for being budget-friendly, and its laid-back vibe makes it an ideal destination for first-time travellers. Don’t miss the chance to take a food tour while you’re there!
Bali, Indonesia: Known for its stunning beaches, vibrant culture, and wellness retreats, Bali is perfect if you’re looking for a place to relax, recharge, and indulge in self-care. It’s also a great place for solo travellers where you will find plenty of other women to connect with.
New Zealand: If nature and adventure are calling your name, New Zealand is the place to be. Known for its breathtaking landscapes and outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking, and exploring national parks, it’s a fantastic option for those seeking both tranquillity and adventure. I have loads of blog posts and videos with ideas for you, check out THIS LINK for one of my most popular – a wine tour in the Gibbston Valley.
Paris, France: The City of Light offers everything from world-class museums to charming cafés and incredible shopping. Paris is perfect for women who love culture, art, and history.
