Last week I went to my second ever Burns Night Supper. And as with the first, it was a lot of fun.
For those who don’t know, it’s an event held on 25th January to celebrate the birthday of Robert (Rabbie) Burns, the famous Scottish poet.
There were kilts, a few drams of whiskey, some pipers (via the medium of YouTube and the band with the fabulous name, “The Red Hot Chilli Pipers”), a haggis, a stabbing (of the haggis) and several poems read in honour of the occasion.
What’s not to love?
So, in honour of the occasion, I thought this was the perfect subject for this week’s email: A reflection on my travels over the border.
Scotland for me was one of the good things that came out of “The COVID years”. With nowhere else to run, I was “forced” into a summer holiday much closer to home.
And I loved it so much that I returned the following year.
On my first visit I chose the Highlands and Islands, namely the isles of Mull and Skye. A year later I tackled the famous North Coast 500 drive, circumnavigating 500 kilometres around the whole northern coastline, while also taking a detour to the island (and it is just one island) of Lewis and Harris.
For example, if you’re a Harry Potter fan, I have everything you need to know to experience the Hogwarts Train.
Alternatively, there is the stunning scenery around Fort William, especially if you are a fan of Outlander or James Bonds home in Skyfall. My video of the area remains my most popular on YouTube and now has over 23,000 views.
If you want an itinerary all done for you then don’t miss my full 10-day road trip.
So, have you been to Scotland? If so, where do you recommend for my next venture across the border? Or where have you discovered that is close to home, but you were totally blown away by? Hit reply to this email to let me know or connect via your social method of choice (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, Threads or LinkedIn) to give me all the details.

This week, on YouTube, I take you back to Puerto Rico and the fantastic island of Vieques. It was my favourite place to visit during the month I spent there. I arrived on a bumpy flight in a tiny 8-seater plane. Then, hired a trusty golf cart to explore the best beaches, try and fail at snorkelling, get a bit too close to a 300-year-old tree, all while meeting the local wild horses at every stop. If you are visiting Puerto Rico, don’t miss your chance to hop over to Vieques Island too. You can see it all for yourself HERE.
Until next time,
Safe Travels
