A quiet reflection on nature, space, and what we receive when we step outside
There’s something I’ve been noticing again recently.
Not in a dramatic way.
Just quietly.
How different I feel when I’m outside.
Not walking with urgency.
Not heading somewhere specific.
Just being there.
At first, it’s subtle.
Then something begins to shift.
My shoulders drop.
My breathing slows.
My thoughts feel less crowded.
And I’m reminded that the world holds something we don’t always realise we need.
So much of life happens inside.
Inside routines.
Inside responsibilities.
Inside spaces designed to keep everything moving.
And we adapt to that.
But when we step outside of it, even briefly, something responds.
Not because anything is fixed.
But because something softens.
I felt that clearly at the end of the Camino.
Walking into Santiago de Compostela after days of open landscapes and quiet paths.
And then suddenly — crowds, noise, movement everywhere.
There was beauty in that arrival.
But also a quiet awareness of what had come before it.
The space.
The connection.
The simplicity of walking through landscapes that asked nothing of me.
More recently, I’ve felt something similar while hiking alone.
Week 9 holds no big moment — just presence.
And again, that same softening.
There’s a growing understanding that landscapes themselves offer something restorative.
Forests.
Mountains.
Coastlines.
Not just visually, but physically and emotionally.
And perhaps that’s what we’re really receiving.
Not just time outside.
But space within.
And maybe, on Earth Day 2026, that’s something worth noticing.
So, when was the last time you felt yourself soften, even just a little, outside? Leave a comment if something here resonated with you.
Until next time,
Safe travels,
Sue x
